In an act of self effacement (and probably to ward off unkind comments) he changed his name to M.Camargo Guarnieri (Camargo was his mother&#8217;s maiden name, and M. stands, of course, for Mozart).<br \/>\nHe is arguably the most important Brazilian composer after\u00a0<a title=\"Heitor Villa-Lobos\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Heitor_Villa-Lobos\">Heitor Villa-Lobos<\/a>\u00a0having written 6 symphonies, 6 piano concertos and many chamber works.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I had first come across him as one one of the composers in the collection <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sheetmusicplus.com\/title\/Autori-Moderni-9-Contemporary-Compositions\/3131058\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Antologia per Chitarra<\/em> published by Ricordi<\/a> and edited by Abloniz &#8211; Manuel Barrueco played his Etude <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/ecx.images-amazon.com\/images\/I\/519UDmYpjaL._SL500_AA300_.jpg\" width=\"180\" height=\"180\" \/>No.1 beautifully on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Manuel-Barrueco-Guitar-Villa-Lobos-Guarnieri\/dp\/B001IE629A\" target=\"_blank\">an early recording<\/a>.<br \/>\nThis piece was dedicated to <a href=\"http:\/\/pt.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Isa%C3%ADas_S\u00e1vio\" target=\"_blank\">Isaias Savio<\/a>, genial educator and performer.\u00a0At that time Guarnieri had already composed\u00a0Ponteio\u00a0(1944) and\u00a0Valsa Ch\u00f4ro\u00a0(1954) for guitar solo.<br \/>\nIncidentally the Antologia is well worth getting hold of, as it contains, amongst other things original guitar pieces by Auric (one of Les Six), Poulenc, Petrassi, Sauget and Rodrigo.<\/p>\n<p>I was reminded of the composer when chatting to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/fabio.zanon.710\" target=\"_blank\">Fabio Zanon<\/a> at <a title=\"West Dean 2013 1\" href=\"http:\/\/geraldgarcia.com.c51.previewmysite.eu\/WPress\/?p=820\" target=\"_blank\">West Dean<\/a> this year, and have come across some other works and arrangements of his, which give a fairly rounded view of this important Brazilian composer&#8217;s work.<\/p>\n<p>First off, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/ZDfTROX0v3Q&amp;feature=youtu.be\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>\u201cBrazilian Guitar Quartet plays Camargo Guarnieri\u201d<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0playing arrangements of\u00a0Dan\u00e7a Negra, Valsa No.8 and Dan\u00e7a Brasileira<\/p>\n<p>Cello Concerto<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"584\" height=\"438\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nqWt9AfnRyI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Choro for piano and orchestra<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"584\" height=\"438\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FIhWA3Mypf0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Concerto for strings and percussion<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"584\" height=\"438\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tl7ctdvtkW4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Ponteios for piano<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"584\" height=\"438\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/videoseries?list=PLF5BEB033E7D26DC4\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Symphony No.4 &#8216;Brasilia&#8217;<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Hg-1p43SDqU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>He had two brothers, one named Verdi, the other Rossine, so it isn&#8217;t surprising that his parents had musical ambitions for Mozart Guarnieri.
