He was trained at the\u00a0<a title=\"Neues Wiener Konservatorium\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Neues_Wiener_Konservatorium\">New Vienna Conservatory<\/a>\u00a0where later he taught for some time.<br \/>\nWith the support of such important musicians as\u00a0<a title=\"Wilhelm Furtw\u00e4ngler\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wilhelm_Furtw%C3%A4ngler\">Wilhelm Furtw\u00e4ngler<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Richard Strauss\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Richard_Strauss\">Richard Strauss<\/a>\u00a0and others, he obtained the directorship of the\u00a0Mainz\u00a0Conservatory.<\/p>\n<p>G\u00e1l composed in nearly every genre and his operas, which include\u00a0<i>Der Artz der Sobeide<\/i>,\u00a0<i>Die Heilige Ente<\/i>\u00a0and<i>Das Lied der Nacht<\/i>, were particularly popular during the 1920s.<br \/>\nAlthough not exactly a household name in the guitar world, he did compose many works which include the mandolin and guitar, some of which are for mandolin orchestra.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>When the Nazis occupied Mainz in 1933, G\u00e1l was dismissed as director of the conservatory and his music was banned<\/p>\n<p>He was forced to leave Germany and eventually emigrated to Britain, where he taught at the\u00a0University of Edinburgh\u00a0for many years.<br \/>\nHowever, at the start of\u00a0World War II\u00a0the British government interned all\u00a0<a title=\"Enemy alien\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Enemy_alien\">enemy aliens<\/a>, including G\u00e1l.<br \/>\nHe continued to compose whilst interned in\u00a0<a title=\"Huyton\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Huyton\">Huyton Camp<\/a>\u00a0near\u00a0Liverpool\u00a0and Central Camp in\u00a0Douglas,\u00a0Isle of Man. He was not interned for long as the government soon began to release those who did not pose a threat to the allies.<\/p>\n<p>He died in Edinburgh at the age of 97.<\/p>\n<p>He has written several works which include the guitar, amongst them\u00a0<span style=\"color: #990000;\">Op. 66<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"works\/op66.html\" target=\"_blank\">Biedermeier Dances<\/a>\u00a0for mandolin orchestra (or mandolin, violin, mandola, guitar, mandoloncello and bass mandolin = Op. 66b) and\u00a0<span style=\"color: #990000;\">Op. 68c<\/span>.\u00a0<a href=\"works\/op68c.html\" target=\"_blank\">Divertimento<\/a>\u00a0for 2 treble recorders and guitar.<br \/>\nHe has made a substantial contribute to the repertoire of the mandolin orchestra, which also included guitars. Recordings made during this period include a set of the four symphonies on the\u00a0<a title=\"Avie\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Avie\">Avie<\/a>\u00a0label, under conductors\u00a0<a title=\"Kenneth Woods\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kenneth_Woods\">Kenneth Woods<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Thomas Zehetmair\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas_Zehetmair\">Thomas Zehetmair<\/a>, as well as recordings of concertos and chamber music.<\/p>\n<p>I first met <a href=\"http:\/\/kennethwoods.net\/blog1\/\">Kenneth<\/a> when he conducted my concerto &#8220;Heart of the Rose&#8221; in Derby, with<a href=\"http:\/\/www.steventhachuk.com\" target=\"_blank\"> Steve Thachuk <\/a>playing the solo guitar part. He was very helpful and a real gent despite the odd difficulty with the orchestral writing!<\/p>\n<p>I also remember seeing Hladky (Wien)\u00a0editions dog eared copies of\u00a0G\u00e1l&#8217;s Sinfoniettas for<em> Zupforchester <\/em>in Foyle&#8217;s music department in the 70s and wondering if I would ever get an orchestra together to play them.
