Paoli was born in\u00a0Monfalcone, a little town near\u00a0Trieste, but moved to\u00a0Genoa\u00a0at a young age.<\/p>\n

After several different jobs, he was signed to\u00a0Ricordi<\/a>\u00a0with friends and fellow musicians\u00a0Luigi Tenco<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Bruno Lauzi<\/a>. His first success was the single “La Gatta”, which has been used in Italian language teaching classes in American middle schools and high schools.<\/p>\n

“Il cielo in una stanza” was composed in 1959. According to Paoli, the lyrics came to him while lying on a brothel bed. Gazing at the purple ceiling, he thought, “Love can grow at any moment at any place”.\u00a0Mina<\/a>‘s single release of the song topped the list of annual sales in Italy\u00a0and reached Billboard Hot 100. Video performances of the song were included in the movies “Io bacio… tu baci” and “Appuntamento a Ischia”. Later it was featured in the “Goodfellas<\/a>” movie. Carla Bruni Sarkozy covered the song (mixing French with her native Italian) in her debut album (“Quelqu’un m’a dit”).<\/p>\n

Gino Paoli\u2019s debut\u00a0album<\/a>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Gino Paoli<\/i>\u00a0was released in Italy on October 8, 1961 on Dischi Ricordi.

“Il cielo in una stanza” success was followed by “Sapore di sale” (1963), arranged by\u00a0Ennio Morricone<\/a>\u00a0and believed to be his most famous song.<\/p>\n

In the same year he attempted suicide by shooting himself in the heart (the bullet is still inside his chest).<\/p>\n
