He was held in high regard amongst many musicians, including the members of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, evidenced by his honorary membership; the\u00a0<a title=\"London Symphony Orchestra\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/London_Symphony_Orchestra\">London Symphony Orchestra<\/a>, of which he was President; and the<a title=\"Israel Philharmonic Orchestra\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Israel_Philharmonic_Orchestra\">Israel Philharmonic Orchestra<\/a>, with which he appeared regularly as guest conductor.<br \/>\nHe was probably the main conductor from the 1960s onwards who acquired a sort of superstar status similar to that of\u00a0<a title=\"Herbert von Karajan\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Herbert_von_Karajan\">Herbert von Karajan<\/a>.
